Stress Management 101
Part 1
Stress has two faces.
It is both normal and dangerous.
It is both energizing and debilitating.
It can move you forward or be the precursor to fatal illnesses. This first series on stress 101 is to give
you the foundation and knowledge and tips of recognizing, understanding and
managing stress. First a foundation of knowledge of stress is essential.
If you’re breathing
and living in the world then you’re going to experience stress. What we’re usually talking about when we
speak of stress are a set of symptoms that vary from person to person. Stomach issues, digestive issues, tightness
of your neck and shoulders, depression, constant fatigue, headaches, and
sleeplessness to name a few symptoms caused by excessive stress.
A certain amount of
stress is normal and good. It is a
driving energy that is usable and an
energy that you can use to move forward in your life. When stress is good it is energizing,
motivating and productive. Stress
becomes a problem both physically and mentally when there is too much or
experienced over a prolonged period of time without relief.

Learn To Recognize And Control Your Thoughts
Stress is not always a reaction to a specific situation. Often, our thoughts can lead to intense feelings of stress. Whether a situation is big or small we determine the size of the situation by the thoughts that we think. Have you ever noticed how uptight you feel when you are caught up in your own thinking? Once a situation occurs that creates some stress the mind begins to race from one thought which leads to another and another and yet another until at some point, you become incredibly agitated. The solution is to notice what's happening in your head before your thoughts have a chance to build momentum. I call what happens "going on automatic"! Once you go on "automatic" then you will probably go into anger or some other inappropriate behavior. You can stop your thoughts at anytime. The sooner you catch yourself in the act of building your mental snowball or mind tornado, the easier it it is to stop.

Watch Your Words
I know you know people who have tried to make you feel bad about yourself. Either through aggressive attempts or passive-aggressive attempts. Sometimes it is something said in a moment of anger. Sometimes mean things are said because of a person's jealousy, fear or worse their own pain and it is not about you at all. Sometimes people say things in such a way that those words are carved deep inside and become a feeling that lives long after the offense. More often than not that which impacts us deeply is said by those people we are the closest too.
Be mindful of the things you say. Your words have power. You have the power to arrest the shine off another or polish the shine of another.......

Anger Management Is More Than Just Anger Management
It is not unusual for someone to call and cancel their first appointment a few times before finally arriving at my office. After all who REALLY wants to come to Anger Management? Anger Management is a process that goes far beyond dealing with just anger. Anger Management is not therapy however it is incredibly therapeutic. In actuality, it is performance management. If you are not getting something that you want more than likely you are doing a behavior that is preventing your success. It is a behavior that happens over and over again in one or more aspects of your life and usually with the same result. Maybe you don't know how to stop the behavior. Maybe you don't really know what to do. Maybe you can't exactly put your finger on what the behavior is. Anger may be how you arrive to my office because you're acting out. Granted acting out is an issue for you. However, your anger is under the umbrella of something bigger. Let's find out what that is and many things will positively reconfigure around you.
